Day One Fasting & Prayer "Deny"
"For what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?" "Deny"
31 And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 32 And He was stating the matter plainly. And Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." 34 And He summoned the multitude with His disciples, and said to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 "For whoever wishes to save his life shall lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel's shall save it. 36 "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 "For what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels."
Mark 8:31-38 NASB
I recently heard a well known speaker who claims to know God and teach His word all across the world. If I would say the name everyone would know who it is. During a speaking engagement this person said this about the amount of wealth they had amassed. "I am enjoying my reward here on this earth" There might be more truth to that statement then this person would want to admit. I heard that and began to cry. The teaching and comments were leading the audience to believe that if you live for God and not just obey God but do as this person does then you too can be rewarded with wealth and possessions to enjoy while you live on this earth. How sad, not because I don't believe in God pouring out wealth on people or that I am mad because God has not given me the same amount of wealth but because wealth has nothing to do with serving God. Hear God's rebuke to Peter. "You are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's."
Are you setting your mind on God's interest?
God's interest is you and your whole being. He says that the greatest two commandments are "Love Him with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and love your neighbor as your self." The word deny is to actually disown self. The writer of Proverbs tells us not to lean on our own understanding. So to disown myself is not to rely on anything I can think up but daily disown my own thoughts and seek God for His thoughts on every decision I need to make. We are not going to always be right but God desire to help us get better and better each day in hearing and obeying what He says. The more we are willing to disown self the more we will begin to hear and understand God and His will in all situations.
Today turn the TV off, I know this is scary but turn off the cell phone and computers open the Bible and read it. Ask God to show you what it means and to help you do what it says. You will be amazed at the peace and joy you will find when your mind is on God's interest. His love will overwhelm you, His mercy will forgive you and His grace will equip you to change the world around you.
Try it and you will not be disappointed
Lord today you have revealed your love for me in such a wonderful way and I thank you for that. Lord help me to disown myself and to begin asking you for your interest. Thank you today for your love, forgiveness and grace to make me an attractive person for you.
